Et voilà! Genius Hour Project is almost complete! It was a long and arduous process, but it is pretty much done. After having spent many hours (er, days) in front of the computer screen I can safely say that I have something that is pretty much ready for submission. I have created a film about international Reggae music on the Final Cut Pro X editing software. My original intent was to edit a short film with a running length of about 8-10 minutes. I kind of went a bit overboard and my final cut is over 20 minutes long. I just had so much information and so many songs that I wanted to include in the film, that I could not squeeze it all into a 10 minute timeframe. But I think that I am pretty happy with the result. I went over the film again a few days ago and cut out a few superfluous bits. I also shortened a few of the clips of artist songs to try and make the edit flow a little bit better. I also added title cards to introduce the artists profiled in the film. That was super easy to...

So here it is, the final week of the Genius Hour project. This has definitely been the most challenging, time-consuming week of the entire project. Not that I left everything until the last minute, but I definitely underestimated the amount of time that I would need to complete my mission. I should have been more diligent throughout the course of this project and done more hands-on editing with the actual Final Cut Pro X system from the beginning. But that being said, I have learned from my mistakes, and have made a mental note for the future. So far this week, I spent over 40 hours working on my short film. I have been really dedicated to the project and this blog post is the first assignment that I have worked on outside of my short film. So how did I come to spend so much time working on my Genius Hour project? Well, the editing of a film (albeit a short film) is something that requires a lot of time. And even moreso when one does not know how to use the software that they are u...

This week I wish that I had more time to work on my Genius Hour project. Have been really busy with work for all of my other classes and have found it a bit hard to carve out some Genius Hour time. Wish I had been more productive, but I did manage to get some things done. I was late on updating my ‘Tune of the Week’ on my blog, but I just did that now. The track, ‘Go Lassie’ is out of Ireland by Cian Finn working together with Scottish soundsystem Mungo’s Hifi. A very nice tune to get on wax if you can find it. But that 45 won’t come cheap! So what did I actually get done thus far this week on my Genius Hour project? Well, I have revised some of the narration bits that I wrote down to describe the artists. The tricky part is to not make the description for narration too long as I just need short descriptive bits of text to include in the film. I still may have to pare these voiceover bits down. I also have been fooling around in the Final Cut Pro X program this week. I have created a...

This week I worked on a few things for my Genius Hour Blog. First off, I have been spinning Reggae albums in my living room. Playing all kinds of international Reggae grooves. I downloaded a new German reggae album by Gentleman and put that into the rotation on my i-phone. Also downloaded the latest Tiken Jah Fakoly album and have been listening to that this week. I began writing short bits of narration for the Reggae artists that I would like to profile. Jotted down some important points and am making small paragraphs which I would like to record as voiceover. I have read up on the following seven artists and I think that these are the ones that have made the final cut to appear in the short film: Alborosie (🇮🇹 ) , Alpha Blondy (🇨🇮 ), The Emeterians (🇪🇸 ), Fat Freddy’s Drop (🇳🇿), Gentleman (🇩🇪 ), Macka B (🇬🇧 ) and Tiken Jah Fakoly (🇨🇮 ). Perhaps I shall have to further pare down my selection, but at the moment, these are the artists that I am going to profi...

Post the Second: The Research Begins

So I am now into school week number two in the Tech Ed program. Aside from some frustrations regarding computer ineptitude, I am feeling alright about how things are going. I have read all of the Genius Hour questions that have been posted on the Forum and there are some really good ones in there. I somehow whittled my Genius Hour Question down to 30 words and we’ll take it from there. In essence, the question “Can I teach myself how to use Apple’s Final Cut editing software to create a short film which educates the viewer on the international presence of Reggae music across the globe?”, may seem a bit daunting at first, but I am going to work on this so as to try and make it clear, concise and cogent. I feel that the project at hand, attempting to use to learn the editing software by myself, is one major aspect of this task I have set out. The other major task is that of the narrative of the film. It may just be almost as important as the technical project of learning how to use the ...
